Casa Los Frailes takes the name as the Jesuit Friars used to live in the Estate during two centuries (XVII to XVIII). Since then, about 250 years ago, in 1771 Casa Los Frailes estate belongs the Velázquez family, managing the winery today in the 13th generation.
Casa Los Frailes pioneered organic farming, being certified already in the year 2000.
The vineyard for the Caliza lies 600 meters over sea level. Limestones and sandy soils i.e. poor soils dominate. However, iron offsets and the good levels of magnesium allow good grape ripening and keep also good acidity levels . The fresh balance of this monastrell is due to this soil. The vines were planted in 1978 in dry agriculture. The wine is elaborated like the Jesuits did, limiting to minimum the intervention at the winery and using the same concrete deposits and amphorae as the monks used a long time ago.
Expect a fresh and powerful wine with well balanced aromas of red fruits and spice. «It has a bright ruby color and a lively palate with freshness and very fine tannins» (Robert Parker about 2018 vintage 93 pts,)
